Vietnam Taps Halal Market To Boost Agricultural Exports

Vietnam is now focusing more on the Halal market to increase its agricultural exports. With over 240 million Muslims living in Southeast Asia, mainly in countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines, the demand for Halal-certified food is growing fast. Since Vietnam is close to these countries, it has a good chance to meet this demand by offering fresh, high-quality products like rice, coffee, seafood, fruits, and cashews.

The global Halal food market is also expanding. According to Verified Market Research, the Halal food and beverage market in the Middle East and Africa was worth around USD 60 billion in 2024 and could grow to over USD 110 billion by 2032. Globally, the Halal food market crossed USD 2.5 trillion in 2024 and is expected to double by 2031.

To help local businesses enter this growing market, Vietnam launched the National Halal Certification Center (HALCERT) in October 2024. The country also introduced its own Halal standards. Now, around 1,000 Vietnamese companies, including well-known names like Vinamilk, TH True Milk, and Minh Phu Seafood, have received Halal certification.

In 2024, Vietnam exported nearly USD 700 million worth of Halal food and agricultural products. Major buyers include the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt. However, Vietnam is still behind countries like Malaysia and Indonesia when it comes to Halal exports. Some challenges include a lack of coordination among exporters and not enough globally recognized Halal certification bodies.

Experts say that Vietnamese businesses can grow faster in the Halal market by following international standards such as GlobalGAP, HACCP, and VietGap. Getting certificates approved by trusted authorities like JAKIM (Malaysia) and BPJPH (Indonesia) is also important. On top of that, joining trade shows, improving product marketing, and building strong online networks can help.

Furthermore, many Vietnamese exporters are now turning to online B2B marketplaces like Tradewheel, AgriMarket, and Amazon to reach international buyers. These platforms make it easier for businesses to display their Halal-certified products, connect with importers, and manage logistics. Using these marketplaces has become a smart move for many agriculture exporters who are looking to grow their presence in the global Halal market.
